This is what our sportsman class is supposed to be, beginner racers, or less experienced. If they want some more practice with an experienced driver then you can do so after the program. There are people that are more than willing to help new racers.

I don't think we need a class, because we shouldn't be having three different levels of competition for one of our senior divisions. The sportsman division is somewhat okay as it is supposed to be our novice division, but the sportsman division shouldn't be a full-time place for a driver. The goal of each driver in sportsman should be to become fast enough to move up into the regular Clone Senior classes, and not try to run for championships each year. Novice instructional days would work to get them up to speed, because nobody should be out on the track with other inexperienced drivers when they are more than 15 seconds off the pace.

Then again, I don't race full-time in any of these Clone Senior divisons, so I imagine the best answer to this would be to get a poll from the senior drivers. I just am afraid that if we split into an extra class, it would hurt numbers more than benefit them because drivers who would be dominating novice but aren't ready to be winning in sportsman yet would stay in it, and then we get 3 classes of 5 karts each, which will only dwindle during the season, at best holding the same kart counts.

IMHO people wanting seat time can pay $35 for a practice day (takes all of 5 minutes to pay on PayPal) and go most anytime and practice all day. A few long practice days and they'll be just fine in the Sportsman or most any other class.

IMHO, the most important thing new people need to know is to not worry about what the other karts around you are doing. Concentrate on your line, and hold that line. Be consistent and the faster folks will go right by you. The problem comes when slower karts worry about everyone else and are from one side of the track to the other.... this is something the race director should cover before every race in the driver's meeting.
