Does anyone know of any great begineers guide books to karting? preferably something with the mechanics and technical information of the kart and some tips on buying a new/used kart?

Check here
http://www.aargear.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=359

The shop is in Woodstock, GA and you can walk, check what you want and buy it. And as always, asking questions and browsing knowledge base (forums) - the easiest way to learn.

Welcome to the sport of karting. While books are good to look at and get some advice, if you want to get off to a quick start with your karting career you should give some thought to visiting a kart shop that offers the whole package, advice, selling you parts, showing you how to do maintenance, kart set up, chassis tuning, and most importantly be at the track where you really need the help. In a nut shell start a relationship with a true kart shop, you will find that this will go a long way and save you a lot of time and money down the road.
Always remember, buying from a discount store or off the internet is great if you don't think you will even need help.

Good luck and I am sure GSKA is looking forward to having you join the family and make your stay in karting a great time.

If I remember correctly, you're from Alabama. Maybe somebody can advise you on a shop fairly local to you.

If you're planning to run B'ville a lot, there are a couple shops represented at the track every event. The hard part is figuring out which one is going to suit your needs best, some are more hands-on than others, which may or may not be a good thing from your point of view.

Welcome to the club, see you at the track.
