Lanier National Speedway, which has been vacant since early 2011, has been purchased by five-time IMSA driving champion and Atlanta native Jim Downing, as announced Tuesday in a press release.
The Brasleton track contains a 3/8-mile oval originally built by Bud Lunsford in 1982, but Downing has no immediate plans for the track.
“I know there are people interested in short track racing for stock cars, but I will not be hosting this type of event,” said Downing. “We intend to have a unique facility, but have made no specific plans and will not embark on any new developments until much later this year.”
Downing has won sports car races at Daytona, in the Le Mans and circuit and at Road Atlanta, but he is best known in motor racing for the HANS Device, a safety invention he pioneered with his business partner Dr. Robert Hubbard, the biomechanical engineer who designed the device.
“Right now my focus is on getting my new direct-to-consumer HANS business going,” said Downing.
Downing sold the manufacturing and distribution rights for the HANS to Simpson Performance Products in August of 2012.
