The GSKA Board is continually trying to make improvements that will support the growth of each class. There are several Yamaha racers that would like improvements to help grow the 2 Cycle and Yamaha classes. If you are a current 2 Cycle racer or are considering 2 Cycle, please provide your input. It is never too late to make improvements.
One recommendation that has been voiced is to have a Kart Shop support this class. I can not agree more, but this takes a shops commitment to be at the track every race weekend in order for this to be successful. This is one of the primary reason why the Clone class is successful. Roberts Kart Shop is at the race track every weekend promoting the class and supporting their customers.
The two 2 Cycle shops that are available to support this class are: Raceway Motorsports and Engine Services.
Anytime a member has a recommendation, please let the BoD know. _________________ John

As the current Sr. 2 Cycle Director, I think all 2 Cycle racers should know a few things about me and why I was nominated for this position for the past two years.
1. I have been involved in 2 Cycle racing since 1995.
2. I have tuned on many 2 Cycle engines. Yamaha, HPV, Parilla Leopard and other Tag motors, Rotax, ICA, Shifter, etc.
3. I have taken my son racing around the world to compete in all levels of 2 Cycle racing
4. Last but most important, I have a passion for 2 Cycle racing.
Some may wonder why I don't race 2 Cycle if I have a passion for it. It is really quite simple. There are a couple of reasons.
1. I have to be careful how and where I spend my money with the down economy.
2. I want to race against a lot of karters.
3. There is not enough speed difference between a Clone motor and a Yamaha Can.
Also, I am at the track almost every race weekend and always willing and able to help any 2 cycle or 4 cycle karter. All a racer has to do is Ask. _________________ John

For the 2 Cycle racers, one thing we could consider next year is adopt a replacement class for the Sr. Yamaha Can. In the midwest, several very successful regional series and clubs have started a new class called Formula Yamaha Sr. The advantage to this class is the following.
1. Speed differential over a clone is significantly higher. This is important for current 4 cycle racers to get into something faster.
2. Spec Pipe and Header so it eliminates all the pipe variables.
3. Minimum Flex Length of 16" to reduce engine failures. Shorter the flex, the easier it is to seize a motor.
4. Low stall speed on the clutch. Any clutch is allowed, but must clutch must slip under 8,000 rpm's. This helps on the longivity on the clutch.
The cost to add the pipe and the header is approximately $200. _________________ John

Is a pipe motor and a can motor built the same way? can you switch between the two different exhausts? _________________ Dave Baker Jr #96 |

Dave, they are built differently, but you can run a pipe on a can motor and visa versa. The differences are the port heights and carb. What I don't know is how different an engine build is different with the PRD Spec pipe, but if there are differences I will speak to the people that know. _________________ John

You know this really gets under my skin. I freakin went and spent 1100.00 dollars to get my yamaha stuff updated to run can at barnesville. Now you are trying to change the class. The class has just started to get back together as a can and now you want to change it before it gets going. Give the cans a chance to grow. man, let the new guys get use to running a can before you take it away from them. The can class is strong in a lot of areas. If you want to offer this other thing than do that but leave the can class outta it. |

Alan,
I was not recommending it and sorry if it appears to look that way. I was posting an idea only. Everyone wants the class to grow and wants ideas to, so this is a thought. Even you have told me that you prefer pipe.
Alan, please post your ideas. It is easy for everyone to sit back and complain. (I am not saying you are complaining and never heard you complain) I recommend that the racers that want to grow the class to come forth with ideas that we can execute on. This was my attempt.
Like I said before, the KEY to the growth of this class is for a SHOP to step up and support this class. For the last two years NO shop has supported this class. _________________ John

Seems like racers are reluctant to get off the can! _________________ "kart racing since 1958, was and still the best bank for the buck in motorsports" |

John, i think that the rules you have going right now are fine. You have the weight that people can get to and still be able to pick the kart up. You have the wka tire rule. I like open tire but hey i can deal with the spec tire. If you just give the class a chance to grow before you start swapping shiz around and actually promote the class to some of the clone guys you might just see it grow. As you no i LOVE Yamaha pipe and still think it is one of the best classes out there. The problem is quite a few people get scared of it since you have to tune the daggone thing. Clutches and carbs have never been fun for alot of people as you know. So let the new guys get on the can that is easy to tune and is if in the right hands 1+ faster than your clone. I dont have a problem with adding a new class that YOU want to push but dont take the class away that i and a few others have invested good money in. And a class that if i want to go race wka in daytona i can still take the same set up down there. You can say you can run a pipe motor with a can, and i have many times. But you know as i do they are not the same. I think we need to do away with all the vintage stuff..in march there just old.. j/k |

Just so everyone is clear. I am NOT pushing another class, just throwing out an idea which no one else cares to do. Ideas are not pushing or recommending.
In addition, I promoted the Can class for just the reason why Alan stated, it is SIMPLE, No complexity. It comes down to the driver and chassis tuning primarily. Also need to know how to adjust your carb and clutch.
If anyone ever needs help, you have me, several shops and several others. _________________ John
