I suspect it is set on a 2 cycle setting (?) and not reading RPMs correctly. I do not have the operations manual. Help appreciated. cb

Try wrapping the RPM lead around the spark plug wire a bunch of times and also make sure you run the RPM lead and the CHT lead apart so they do not interfere with each other.
